Mission Statement

The mission of the Dumfries Elementary School Counseling Program is to develop lifelong learners through a comprehensive and developmental approach that includes academic, career and personal/social skills.  Our students will, to the best of their ability, be responsible for their own academic and social success and response-able to the success of the group.  We will meet this through collaboration with school staff, parents and the community.

Philosophy

The school counseling program at Dumfries Elementary ensures that all students have access to counseling from a certified, ethical counselor who believes in the dignity and value of all students.  The program is based on and delivers a developmental program in accordance with the American School Counselors Association.  In collaboration with parents, teachers and administrators, the counseling program obtains needs assessments through survey and pre and post tests in an effort to develop successful students as life long learners.

~ All students have the capacity to learn and be supported academically.

~ All classroom lessons are based on the K-5 Prince William County Guidance.

~ Curriculum incorporates personal, academic, social and career domains.

Character Counts
The staff and students at Dumfries are working hard to build good character.  We work with a program called Character Counts.  The traits include: TRUSTWORTHINESS, CITITZENSHIP, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, CARING, AND FAIRNESS.  Each month the students learn about a new character trait through morning announcements, guidance lessons, posters and character coupons.  This month our trait is Citizenship.
Respect

Treat others with respect; follow the Golden Rule • Be tolerant of differences • Use good manners, not bad language • Be considerate of the feelings of others • Don’t threaten, hit or hurt anyone • Deal peacefully with anger, insults and disagreements
